Let's talk about the role of acids in digestion. Stomach acids drive the digestive process by breaking down the food we eat.

The esophagus does not have the same protective coating as the stomach. Once the acids go up into the esophagus they can irritate sensitive tissues causing discomfort.

WHAT CAUSES HEARTBURN?

Heartburn occurs when acids from the stomach move up into the esophagus, causing discomfort or pain in the chest.

SYMPTOM MANAGEMENT

  • HABITS TIP # 1: AVOID FAST EATING.

    Take your time, chew slowly, and enjoy every bite in your mouth - eating too fast will make you full long before you know it, which can aggravate symptoms.

  • HABITS TIP # 2: SLEEP MORE.

    Not getting enough sleep can increase acid production and cause heartburn. 8 hours of sleep has to be your magic number; the less you risk aggravating symptoms. Try to do activities that reduce your stress and anxiety levels. Yoga, meditation and exercise is what we recommend.

  • HABITS TIP # 3: WHAT KIND OF FOODS TO AVOID?

    Certain foods can make heartburn symptoms worse. This includes fried foods and fatty foods, alcohol, caffeinated drinks, acidic fruits and juices, tomato sauce, spicy foods, onion, garlic, and sodas.

  • HABITS TIP # 4: WEAR LOOSE CLOTHING.

    If you suffer from heartburn on a regular basis, try wearing loose-fitting clothing. Especially if we talk about pants and jeans. Wearing tight-fitting clothing around your abdomen can put pressure on your stomach and intensify gastroesophageal reflux symptoms.

  • HABITS TIP # 5: EAT, DIGEST AND SLEEP.

    There is nothing like eating a good meal that leaves you ready for bed, but be careful if you suffer from heartburn. If this happens, you should not fall asleep until 3 hours after eating. As soon as you finish eating, give yourself time to walk, move, and do some other activity before bed.
